What are Estrogens and Progestins?
Estrogens, along with progestins, belong to the female sex hormones. In biochemical terms, these in turn belong to the steroid hormones. They are primarily produced in the ovaries depending on the menstrual cycle. During pregnancy, estrogens are also produced in the placenta.
Estrogens
The estrogens include estradiol, estrone and estriol in natural form. The synthetic representative, the derivative (chemical derivative) ethinylestradiol, often makes up the oestrogen-containing portion in combination contraceptive pill preparations.
Progestins
Progestogens include progesterone, pregnanediol and pregnenolone, among others, and are the other ingredient in combination preparations.
The Role of Estrogens
Estrogens are important for the development of female sexual characteristics, but less so than the androgens in men. It promotes breast growth and pubic and axillary hair and alters the vagina and body fat distribution.
It is responsible for follicle maturation in the ovaries during the menstrual cycle. In the uterus, estrogen promotes the development of the mucous membrane and the contraction of the uterine muscles. In the vagina, estrogen increases lactic acid production through mucosal thickening and epithelial shedding, thus reducing the risk of infection.
In the cervix, the so-called cervical mucus plug prevents sperm from entering the uterus. Oestrogen changes the mucus so that the sperm can penetrate more easily and it increases the survival time of the sperm. Oestrogen also retains salt and water in the kidneys and locally, leading to oedema (water retention in the tissues).
Oestrogen lowers LDL (low densitiy lipoprotein), the bad cholesterol, and increases HDL (high densitiy lipoprotein), the so-called good cholesterol. This explains why women are less frequently affected by arteriosclerosis than men.
In the bone area, the bone-building cells (osteoblasts) are supported and thus the bone structure is built up. A deficiency can lead to osteoporosis. The blood's ability to clot is promoted by oestrogen, which leads to an increased risk of thrombosis.
